Netflix Builds ‘Gray Man’ Metaverse Experience in Decentraland

On Tuesday, streaming giant Netflix and decentralized virtual reality platform Decentraland announced a partnership to create an immersive metaverse experience tied to the upcoming spy thriller movie "The Gray Man".
Starting this week, Decentraland users will have access to a special experience within the virtual world based on the film. Players can explore motion-captured virtual environments of the movie's locations, play mini-games, and collect NFTs (non-fungible tokens) by completing challenges related to the story.
"We're excited to give fans a sneak peek into 'The Gray Man' universe and blur the line between the film and Decentraland," said a Netflix spokesperson. "This partnership lets us experiment with new ways to engage audiences in our movies and TV shows." ## Netflix takes steps to expand its metaverse presence
The "Gray Man" experience is among the company's forays into the metaverse, which has seen a major surge in interest (and venture capital) in the past year. Netflix is also developing a metaverse strategy for its top series, with a personalized "Stranger Things" experience on the Roblox gaming platform having already attracted millions of players. And last month, Netflix was reported to be researching the use of AI in virtual reality and metaverse content.
Industry experts say Netflix's metaverse efforts are an important step in tackling the metaverse opportunity for a company with a dominant position in global online entertainment and a recent history of investing in interactive content.
"There's a lot of potential for Netflix to expand its audience by engaging with fans in the metaverse," the Netflix spokesperson commented. "We'm committed to experimenting in this space and learning from these projects to inform our long-term strategy." ## What this means for users
For metaverse users and investors, the "Gray Man" experience shows that major entertainment companies are taking the metaverse seriously and will likely continue to invest in virtual world content and partnership deals.
"Gray Man" fans will get an early peek at the film and be able to explore its world as they wait for its release in theaters and on Netflix. But the experience will also be accessible to anybody with access to the Decentraland platform, offering a more inviting onramp to the metaverse for new users.
A Netflix spokesperson was unable to provide additional details on the length and scope of the partnership, or specify if more movie tie-ins and interactive experiences were planned.
