Estonia Plans to Digitalize the Residency Program

TechnologyBit News Today2 min read

The Estonian government announced its plan to revamp the country's digital residency program. This residency program, which allows foreign citizens to establish a company in Estonia and digitally sign documents, is already widespread.

The government has said this overhaul aims to make the process more straightforward, transparent, and secure. Critics, however, point to the country's history of data leaks and breaches, raising concerns about the safety of sensitive information. ## Streamlining Government Services

Estonia has been a leader in e-government.

But online convenience also means online risk. In 2017, the country experienced its most significant data breach. A Russian cyberattack exposed an estimated half million Estonian IDs.

In the week leading up to the digital residency plan announcement, the Estonian Parliament passed a law targeting Russian cyberthreats. In the past, the Estonian Defense Ministry has said that Russian hackers often target Estonian cyber infrastructure.

The government notes that several upgrades to Estonia's cybersecurity system have been made in recent years. But it remains to be seen whether these upgrades have been enough. ## Privacy Concerns Abroad

Any digitalization of privacy comes with significant concerns. Governments all over the world grapple with balancing security and an individual's right to privacy. And concerns about privacy only mount with more data stored online.

Estonia's digital residency program already stores sensitive information, including digital signatures and Estonian personal identification numbers. In many countries, this has led to significant concerns.

Several Estonian politicians have said that there are a lot of questions to answer over the coming weeks and months. Some have called for stricter regulations on who can obtain digital residency. Others have called for more transparency on data breaches. ## An Important Question for Estonia

Estonia's reputation as a leader of digitized government relies on offering secure, private, and easily used services. This is especially true in its digital residency program, where it gathers and stores particularly sensitive information.

The question now becomes: will it be able to maintain this reputation during the upcoming changes? Only time will tell.
