Bermuda Allowed to Pay Taxes with Cryptocurrency

TechnologyBit News Today2 min read

A government in the western Atlantic announced its decision to allow the use of cryptocurrency for tax payments, as of this month.

The Cabinet of Bermuda formally announced today that the adoption of cryptocurrency as an accepted mode of payment for several government services is "beginning immediately". Taxes can now be paid using several major cryptocurrencies, namely Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Paxos. ## Permitted cryptocurrencies expand

As per a statement from the government of Bermuda, the decision to accept cryptocurrencies for paying government services is a major step in the establishment of an open environment for cryptocurrencies in the country. The government further clarified that several other major cryptocurrencies besides the ones specified in the announcement will be accepted as a payment mode for government services.

The government aims to make Bermudian businesses and services more accessible while protecting the interests of the average citizen. ## Implications for crypto holders

The government's statement further added that the cryptocurrency payments for government services are largely intended to offer flexibility and convenience to BTC holders, who have the option to "easily convert cryptocurrency into cash". This allows cryptocurrency holders to make use of their digital assets to pay for goods and services.

Additionally, it will allow tourists and visitors on the island to have an accessible payment method for any services and goods they wish to purchase. Tourists and visitors can freely choose to pay in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, and the goods and services can be available to them at most tourist spots. ## Safety and security

The government also assured Bermudians that there will be no compromise on security or privacy, as the standard for security of transactions remains the same as that of cash payment or bank account for all transactions.

The government is also working with cryptocurrency service providers to ensure the safety and security of the transactions. The transactions will remain anonymous and will be more secure. ## How this move affects the crypto market

The Bermuda government's move to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes and some government services marks a major victory for those in favour of mass adoption of cryptocurrency.

The decision has the potential to encourage other governments to adopt and accept cryptocurrency as a financial instrument. Further, it can encourage more people to come forward to make use of the cryptocurrency as an alternative mode of payment.

Bermuda's move to accept cryptocurrencies as an alternative payment method for paying government services and taxes happens at a time when cryptocurrencies have faced several ups and downs. The market cap has also declined significantly in recent years.
