The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 has showcased the integration of the sense of smell into virtual reality (VR) experiences, as metaverse-focused companies look to create more immersive and realistic experiences for users. Consulting firm McKinsey & Company has predicted that the metaverse could generate $5 trillion in value by 2030, but notes that success in the metaverse will depend on developing a more human aspect that delivers positive experiences to users. The integration of the senses of smell and touch into VR experiences is seen as one way to achieve this.
One of the companies at CES 2023, OVR Technology, showcased a VR headset with a container for eight different aromas that can be mixed together to create various scents. The headset is scheduled for release later in 2023 and has already been used for fragrance marketing, allowing users to experience different environments such as a marshmallow roasting or a bed of roses.
According to Aaron Wisniewski, the CEO of OVR Technology, extended reality will soon be integrated with commerce, entertainment, social connection, education, and well-being. He highlights that the sense of smell gives these experiences “unmatched power.” Another firm, FireFlare Games, also plans to launch a VR dating app that incorporates immersive sensations like touch as soon as the technology becomes readily available in the market.
However, not everyone is excited about this new development. A CES attendee, Ozan Ozaskinli, who tested some haptic products, highlighted that it’s “far from reality” at the moment. Nevertheless, the tech consultant also said that it could potentially be integrated into online meetings as it allows users to “feel something.”
In conclusion, the integration of the sense of smell and touch into virtual reality experiences is seen as a key step in creating more immersive and realistic experiences in the metaverse. While the technology is still in its early stages, it is expected to become more widely available in the market in the near future. Companies are already exploring ways to incorporate these new technologies into various industries such as commerce, entertainment, and social connection. As the metaverse continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how these new technologies shape the virtual world and create new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike.
